Dependency to Drugs and Drug Abuse

The words drug misuse and drug addiction are often used interchangeably, but in reality, there is a difference between misuse of a drug and addiction.  dependency to drugs comes by abusing them, but there is a lot more to dependency than abusing drugs.

Drug abuse is basically the repeated or uncontrolled use of controlled substances.  Another definition that you could use is to say that it is the habitual misuse of a drug.  Making use of drugs for things other than what they were designed for is what this definition entails.  You could implement a number of different definition in reality for “drug misuse”, but they all will center around the idea of a drug being used or overused for reasons other than either theraputic or medicinal.

An dependency to drugs on the other hand is something different in that a person goes through actual pain and trauma when they do not get their fix of the drug. They can experience things like uncontrollable shaking, nausea, and even insomnia to name a few.  Lots of the drugs out there mess with the way that the brain function and alter it to where it cannot function correctly without the drug.

When a person is addicted to drugs, they continue to use the drug despite adverse health reactions and possible damage to their bodies.  This behavior causes them to have complete disregard for their personal health as long as I get that next high or head change and that they need.  For these people quitting really isn’t a very easy option for them.  When a person reaches this point with their drug abuse, it becomes an addiction and must be dealt with accordingly.

Understanding the implications of drug use and addiction can help keep people on track and away from coming to the point of addiction  in their habit.  You know precisely what type of addiction you are dealing with, it  makes it quite a lot easier to find options for treatment.

It doesn’t matter whether it’s you are loved one that is addicted to or abusing drugs, people who are in this situation and life need to seek out a drug treatment program as soon as they can in order to protect themselves from serious health problems.  Treatment can have a profound effect on the drug user as well as on society as a whole.  Setting addicts free from their addictions in the society that we live in enables these people to function more effectively in society and get along with people better which creates a better and more peaceful society in general.

In fact, drug abuse is the number one cause of preventable illness and death in the United States. No matter what drug you are talking about, be it heroin, meth, or any other narcotic drug, these things can cause irreparable damage to the human body.  Use of these things is preventable and educating people is the first step in that.

Dependency and drug abuse are plagues for our society.  Both have been around for years and years, but if we take the time to recognize not only the difference between the two, but also the signs and signals that indicate drug use, we can begin to heal ourselves both as individual people and as a society.
