Lost of people suffer from foot problems for one main reason. Shoes that just don’t fit properly.
Blisters, aching joints and hard, cracked skin are all common complaints that can be alleviated by choosing footwear that fits and then wearing the right shoes for whatever activity you want to do. For your feet to function as they are supposed to you need to choose shoes that fit.
Every day we will each take around 10,000 steps with our feet absorbing repeated impacts and supporting our whole body weight. Our feet must adapt, as we walk, to varied terrains and surfaces. The foot then tightens and becomes tense in order to propel the body forward. Various shoe designs exist in order to support this cycle. For example, walking shoes will often have very strong rigid soles that are good for even the roughest terrain.
A factor that many people overlook when shopping for shoes is the natural swelling of the feet that takes place throughout the day. The primary cause of swelling is gravity. Working in a role that keeps you on your feet will mean that you are very aware of how much your feet can swell during the day. As liquid is drawn toward your feet by gravity then your footwear will become increasingly tight and uncomfortable. This can be alleviated by putting your feet up periodically throughout the day.
Obviously, if your shoes are already tight they wil only get tighter and increasingly uncomfortable as the day progresses. Shoes that are simply too small are guaranteed to give you pain. Ideally we should all have our feet regularly sized. Another point to remember when shopping for shoes is that your feet are smaller in the morning so be certain to make allowances for the swelling that will take place throughout the day. As a rough guide, try to allow about a fingers width of space, inside the shoes, in front of your big toes.
These days many people shop for clothes and shoes online. Not surprisingly this can lead to some problems as you aren’t able to try on the shoes before selecting them and one manufacturer’s size 8 can differ from another. One way to avoid problems is to try on the shoes that you want before buying them online. This may not be popular with your local shoe stores but you can be more confident that, when your shoes arrive, they will fit.
A pair of shoes that fit properly should never need to be worn in. Shoes that are right for the job and that fit properly should feel comfortable.
Selecting the right shoes for what you want to do in them is vitally important. It would be mad to wear a pair of six inch stillettos to run a marathon. I think that simply standing in a pair of six inch stillettos is acually quite mad. But stylish footwear like this has its place. If you spend all day on your feet then choose comfortable, ideally flat lace up shoes that are generously sized.
A form of footwear that has become ubiquitous in recent years is, of course, trainers and skate shoes. These sports shoes come in a whole host of styles, some specialized for certain activities like jogging on city streets or skateboarding. Vans shoes and DC shoes are two notable brands with an excellent reputation for robustness, comfort and long life. I’m a great lover of trainers and will probably be wearing a pair when I finally shuffle off this mortal coil. There is a great variety of fantastic styles and colors available today that you should be able to find some that not only fit comfortably but look great with whatever you want to wear and for whatever you want to do.
