<p>As far as exercises for this beloved body part, none have received as much attention as the crunch. This small little movement has been responsible for more ripped six pack than probably all other exercises combined. Crunches work; there is no question about it. Some variations of crunches can be even more effective than just regular crunches alone. Twisting crunches help to recruit all of the muscles in the abdominal area and will give you an amazing working and get you on your way to a ripped and functional core.</p>
<p>The basic twisting crunch is performed similar to a basic crunch. Lie on the floor with your knees in the air. Crunch forward and twist ever so slightly to the left and then return back to the ground. Then, crunch and twist your torso to the right and return.</p>
<p>For an even bigger bang for your buck, you might want to try weighted twisting crunches. Adding weight to any core workout will dramatically increase the effectiveness of the exercise. Start off with just a small weight plate held behind your head. Hold the plate secure while crunching up and twisting your body. Be careful when performing these as the first few workouts will definitely make you sore.</p>
<p>Another great variation to the twisting crunch is the twisting crunch performed on an exercise ball. The fact that you will have to balance yourself WHILE performing the twisting crunch adds a fantastic dynamic to this simple crunch variation. I like to perform these without weights, because the stabilization required while using an exercise ball usually gives me more than enough of a core workout without even needing to take it to the next level.</p>
<p>Boxers and those in the military alike oftentimes perform military crunches just a little differently. These are often called “explosive twisting crunches.” The difference in these crunches is that once you crunch forward, you twist very quickly to the left and to the right many times before returning back to your original starting position. These crunches should be reserved for this with a significant amount of training and conditioning as they place extreme stress on your entire abdominal region.</p>
<p>One last variation of the twisting crunch requires you to bring your knees to your elbows during the twisting portion. This variation will help to recruit more of your lower abdominals and your upper thighs and hip area as well. This variation is perhaps is a favorite for many folks doing core workouts because of its ability to hit your entire core area in a very thorough way ensuring an overall abdominal workout.</p>

<p>Free weights generally have the least effect on muscle growth at the top and bottom of any movement. When the barbell is at the top or the bottom of the movement, there is no resistance on the muscle. With a weight machine, with the correct elements, there can be maximum tension even at those parts of the movement. <p>A warm up of ten to fifteen minutes should be sufficient. It does not matter what you do to warm up, you just need to get your heart pumping. Also, you should move all parts of your body to loosen up. Cardio types of exercises are excellent for warm up. By doing this you will prevent injuries to the muscles by increasing your core body temperature.</p>
<p>While weight training you will need to do your workout as smoothly and efficiently as possible. Do this by focusing on a smooth, flowing, and continuous type movement. By working out in a fast or jerky manner, you can cause muscle injuries because of the unnecessary strain being placed on your muscles.</p>
<p>Do not hold your breath while weight training. Your muscles always need oxygen to produce energy. Make sure you freely breathe throughout the exercise workout and the timing of when you breathe in or out during does not matter.</p>
<p>Doing exercises with less weight will not challenge your muscles to grow big and strong, so you need to choose the right weight. The great thing about building your abdominals is that it can help prevent back injury and sciatica.</p>
<p>Before we get going, if you have a history of back problems, it’s always a good idea to consult with your health care practitioner.</p>
<p>This routine involves just 8 exercises that you perform one after the other and do 10 to 15 repetitions each. When you are starting out, you may only be able to perform around 6 to 8 of each exercise. Don’t worry, stick with it and in a couple of weeks you will be able to do the 10.</p>
<p>OK, here we go:</p>
<p><strong>Elbow to Opposite Knee Sit-up</strong> While lying on your back and with your legs slightly bent, perform a sit up and each time you come up, touch your elbow to the opposite knee. Keep your hands beside your head and not behind.</p>
<p><strong>Lying crunches</strong> While lying on your back and with your legs slightly bent, elevated and crossed, bring the upper half of your body to your knees. This is a short and sharp movement. Keep your hands beside your head and not behind. </p>
<p><strong>Elbow to Leg Crunches</strong> Same as crunches, except this time you are bringing your elbow to each opposite knee before lying down and repeating the movement.</p>
<p> <strong>Leg raises</strong> With your legs outstretched and slightly elevated and with your hands underneath your backside, raise your legs to 12 inches (30cm) from the ground and back down to just off the ground.  </p>
<p><strong><a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://healthreturned.com/recommends/Rowing_Machine/972/" class="clicky_log_outbound">Rowing Machine</a> Exercise</strong> Start by lying on the ground with your legs elevated just off the ground and extended and with your hands beside your head. <p><strong>Cross-over Crunches</strong> Like crunch, raise only one elbow to the opposite knee at a time. Perform 10 – 15 repetitions on one side before changing.  </p>
<p><strong>Straight-leg Crunches</strong> Perform the crunch with your legs straight and extended vertically.  </p>
<p><strong>‘Windmills’</strong> With your legs wide apart, start from a standing position and with your back straight, reach down with your hand to the opposite foot. Extend the other arm vertically into the air. Repeat this ‘windmill’ action to perform 10-15 repetitions each side.</p>
<p>Finish the workout with a ‘cobra’ stretch — lie on your stomach, and with your knees on the ground and your hands in a ‘push up’ position, push up the upper half of your body so your back is arched. Only push up as far as comfortable. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Does P90x work? Before you begin the p90x exercise DVD, you need to find out if it is something that works and if it is something that you can do.</p>
<p>I have been doing the P90x home exercise DVD for a while now, and speaking from personal experience I can now confidently say that P90x is a great workout program and it works. I have done a lot of home workouts in the past, and although they worked for a while, I always seemed to achieve less and less results the more and more I did the workouts. Which does not make sense, if I am doing a workout more and more, I should be seeing increasing results, not less results. At the time I had no idea why I was seeing such little results from my workouts, until I heard about the workout plateau. The workout plateau is when your body adapts to the exercises you have been doing and instead of seeing positive results, you begin to see no results. Anybody who has been working out for awhile has probably ran into this problem at some point, that is why it is so good to have a personal trainer if you are going to the gym, because that trainer will help you bust through that plateau. That is also why P90x is different from any other home workout that I have done. It was the first to address the workout plateau problem, and it does it pretty easily.</p>
<p>What I absolutely love about my experience with P90x is that each exercise DVD is targeting a specific part of my body. Through these workouts I have seen continued results. Usually when I have been doing a workout for this long I stop seeing results, but with P90x&#8217;s muscle confusion program I have broke through where I normally would see the plateau.</p>
<p>Last year around this time my friends told me they wanted to go on a 17-mile hike, there was only one problem&#8230;I weighed 235 pounds. Now if I was 6&#8242; 6&#8243; and all muscle that would not be a big deal, but I am 5&#8242; 8&#8243;, so I had a lot of weight to lose. I decided to kick my butt into to gear and start taking my health seriously. I ended up losing 40 pounds and I made it through the hike with flying colors, but I still had some excess fat around my arms, upper body and abdominal areas. So I decided to give P90x a chance, and I have seen some great improvements. My arms and chest have seen some great definition, and even my abdominal region, which is usually my problem area, have seen great improvements. I have actually gained weight during this workout, which is fine by me because muscle weighs more than fat, and even though my weight has gone up, my body fat percentage have gone down. I still have a month left with this p90x workout and I will probably continue on with my routines.</p>
<p>      <span style="font-size:90%; font-style:italic;">Brad enjoys exercise and fitness.  In his opinion one of the best DVD works ever is <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://healthreturned.com/recommends/P90X_or_PX90/478/" class="clicky_log_outbound">P90X or PX90</a>(PX90 is what some people incorrectly call P90X).  Another amazing workout is the <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://healthreturned.com/recommends/10_minute_trainer/1615/" class="clicky_log_outbound">10 minute trainer</a>.
